Terre Ice Chandelier
In connection with the Norwegian Polar Institute, Caroline travelled to Norway to make sound recordings under the ice of a melting lake in the Arctic Circle. She has since made ambient compositions using the sounds of the Arctic ice melting. Part of the audio used in soundtrack for the video are extracts from the Arctic ice compositions. The remaining audio is made from recordings of water droplets sizzling on a steel plate. Filmed in high-resolution slow motion and exhibited at Primary (UK, 2023), the film embodies the central themes of environmental translation and relational listening—inviting audiences to engage physically and emotionally with climate data through sound and sculpture.
This work was made in collaboration with Gareth Rees, Professor of Polar Geoinformatics, Scott Polar Research Institute, Barry Squires (camera) and Craig Smith (editing) and was filmed at The University of Derby.
