Hydrophonics was internationally acclaimed as one of the first live performances of its kind. In the article “when does a sound become art?” the International Art Review asked a selection of influential artists and musicians to respond to this ‘million dollar question’, their answers summing up the complexities of what ‘sound art’ really is. Cosey Fanni Tutti cited Hydrophonics as an ‘obvious example of sound as art. She observed the power of the work and its direct physical effect on the listener. (Cosey Fanni Tutti is an English performance artist, musician and writer, best known for her time in the avant-garde groups Throbbing Gristle).
