BAD NOISE is sponsored by : Abbey Road Studio’s,
London, Alchemy Mastering Ltd and Vestax Europe Ltd .
BADNOISE is, amongst other things, a homage to the fast
disappearing vinyl record . Locke experimented with two record decks–rewiring
one of the decks so that it rotated the turntable in the opposite direction,
thus playing the record backwards. Both record decks play the same record
at the same time, one backward, one forwards. The piece of music interacts
with itself to build an interesting soundtrack that slips through an ever-changing
cycle of feedback loops. The turntables are filmed live, by overhead video
cameras and their image projected, live, onto the walls of the gallery
or linked up to monitors. The records can be ‘mixed’ live
or simply left to run on continuous play. There is a short filmloop showing
images of binary and contradictory operations that accompanies the tracks.
Locke worked with musicians, Biff Cowley, Gareth Bailey,
Tim Lovelee ( tummy touch records ),Tom Bailey and Simon White(Neon Heights)
and Arwel Hughes to compose six versions of ‘Bad Noise’ .
Four of the original discs were cut at Abbey Road Studio’s. Other
Sponsors include Vestax (a Japanese company who produce professional recording
and sound equipment) - Bad noise promotes their new digitally controlled
turntable with a unique reverse mode feature- and Alchemy mastering ltd,
London.
Bad Noise has been shown as part of the ‘LOOP’
exhibition in Bonington Gallery, Nottingham and was part of the ‘Loop’
exhibition at the National Centre for Popular Music in Sheffield. It has
also been exhibited at The city Gallery Leicester, The Podewil, and Berlin
and featured in various club venues.
