HYDROPHONICS

An animated symphony written in five parts based on the sight of sound rather than the sound of it. Seven musicians are linked to seven Pools of water sending the sounds of their instruments through the water to create fountains and disturbance that captivate and enchant.
i n collaboration with
Gareth Bailey, Tom Bailey, Charlotte Bishop, Paul Deats, Rachel Foster, Sam Hempton, John Thompson and Steve Truman.

Hydrophonics is a development from the artist’s recent work ‘Breath’, where the sound of her own heart beating was amplified through water so that spectators could experience the sight of sound (see website for details). Since this project, Locke has experimented by sending different sounds through water to experience the different formations on the water surface that each sound makes. Over the past 18 months the artist has been involved in a period of research to explore this further, working with musicians in order to compose music which is based on the sight of the composition rather than the sound of it and developing new designs for water tanks and speaker systems.

This research will form the production of a live performance event, installation and live broadcasts over the Internet.

The premier of HYDROPHONICS took place at the Malt Cross, Nottingham, Monday 21st March 2005.
The project will go on to tour Nationally and Internationally through 2006/7.
